Testing and Wireless Certification

Testing and obtaining certification are the next steps after the finish of initial design and prototyping, but how can you validate that your antenna performance meets the required standards, and what certifications does your device need? This article will discuss the types of testing your antennas must undergo and the certifications required for global market entry. These tests and certifications will help you successfully launch your products to the global market.

Over-the-Air(OTA) Testing

Testing antennas in a fully anechoic chamber is called OTA (over-the-air) testing. A full device OTA testing will provide a comprehensive assessment of an antenna’s performance.

You will get the data of a wireless below:

  • The Total Radiated Power(TRP) — Including Gain,Efficiency, S11, etc)
  • The total isotropic sensitivity (TIS) — 2D or 3D Radiation Patterns, etc)

Pre-compliance Testing

Pre-compliance testing can be defined as the preliminary evaluation of a device for certification. It is the best way to identify if a device underlines a potential possibility to meet all relevant certifications. Especially for devices using Bluetooth or WLAN, early testing benefits the addressing of potential performance faults before they manifest themselves.   • The Total Radiated Power (TRP)
    TRP is an active measure of how much power is radiated in all directions by an antenna when connected to an actual radio transmitter. It is measured in an anechoic chamber with a testing system.

 

  • The Radiated Spurious Emissions (RSE)
    An RSE test is an important required test item for the 3GPP standard and the FCC’s North American standard certifications. It evaluates uncontained (radiated) electromagnetic waves, which often appear as signals in frequency. Erroneous frequencies are a waste of energy.

 

  • The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)
    A SAR test explains how much RF energy is absorbed by the human body or head when using handheld devices. Or shows the absorption of material near an antenna, such as the housing materials.
